Travertine · Above-Counter sink
This rectangular vessel sink is carved by hand from solid Noce travertine quarried in Turkey. It measures 16 inches wide, 48 inches long and 4 inches high, a long and shallow basin that sits on top of the counter and reads almost like a carved trough. Noce is the brown end of the travertine family, with warm earthy tones that run from deep brown through to honey and gold. The stone is natural from rim to base, with no synthetic additives and no cast parts, and because each sink is carved individually from its own block, the pattern of veining and the play of light and dark across the surface are never repeated from one piece to the next. Travertine has been quarried and carved for building and bathing for a very long time, and this sink keeps that tradition in a plain, modern rectangular form.

Design
The surface is honed and filled. Honing grinds the face of the stone smooth but leaves it matte, so it feels soft to the touch and shows less glare, water spotting and fingerprinting than a high gloss would. Filling closes the natural pits and holes that travertine forms as it grows, which leaves a closed, even surface with fewer places for water and soap to settle. The low 4 inch height keeps the profile of the sink quiet on the counter, while the 48 inch length gives it real presence. Inside, the basin is long and open. Travertine is a varied stone by nature, and moderate color variation between sinks is normal: one piece may lean darker brown, another warmer and lighter, with veining in shades from ivory and walnut to gold. That individuality is what separates a carved stone sink from a molded one, and it is the reason no two of these troughs look exactly alike.

Only 4 inches high and 48 inches long, so the basin reads as a slim stone trough.

Where to use it
At 48 inches long, this sink suits a wide vanity in a primary bath, where two people can stand at the same basin, or a generously sized powder room where the sink is meant to be the main feature. The brown tones sit well against light plaster, warm wood and matte black or brass fittings, and the modern rectangular shape keeps the look clean rather than rustic. The basin mounts above the counter, so the whole length of carved stone stays on view. A 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain connections. Because the sink is shallow, a faucet with a moderate reach and gentle flow keeps splashing down, and positioning it over the center of the basin, or over the drain end, is worth planning with the plumber. The size also lends itself to a two faucet layout over a single long basin.

Installation
Solid travertine is heavy, and a 48 inch piece needs a counter that is flat, level and strong along its full length. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain in the sink, and the basin is set on a bead of silicone so it sits firmly and evenly. Because the sink stands above the counter, the faucet needs to clear the rim: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout both work, and the choice is best made before the counter is cut so the supply lines can be run to match. An installer used to natural stone is the safest choice for setting a sink of this length.
Why we chose it
Made to order
This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. A standard length rarely suits every vanity, so the trough can also be carved in a custom size, shape or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter.
Noce travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acids such as citrus, vinegar or harsh bathroom cleaners can etch the honed surface, and a good sealer keeps moisture and stains from soaking in. How often the sink is resealed depends on how much it is used.
