Limestone · Above-Counter sink

Seagrass fossil limestone, 48 inches long

This rectangular vessel sink is carved by hand from beige Seagrass fossil limestone quarried in Turkey. It is a long, low trough: 48 inches long, 16 inches wide and 2.5 inches high, made from a single piece of stone. Limestone forms from layers of organic sediment, and in this stone the traces of shells and sea grasses stay visible as small fossil marks in the surface. Each sink is carved individually, so the pattern of those marks, and the soft shifts of colour across the beige, are never repeated from one piece to the next. The honed finish leaves the stone matte, which lets the texture and the fossil detail read clearly in daylight and changes again when the basin is wet.

Design

A long, shallow trough in honed limestone

The whole sink is honed inside and out. Honing grinds the face smooth but leaves it without gloss, so the limestone shows its natural grain rather than a reflection, and a matte surface is less slippery when wet. The form is simple on purpose: straight sides, a flat base and a long rectangular basin with no overflow. Beside marble, limestone has a quieter look. There are no bold veins, only gentle variations in tone and the scattered fossil marks, which is why it sits comfortably in modern and minimalist rooms as well as in more rustic ones. Moderate colour variation between sinks is normal for this stone, and the exact fossil pattern of each piece is its own.

Where to use it

Room for two at one basin

At 48 inches, this is a sink for a long vanity or a kitchen counter rather than a narrow powder room. The length gives a generous wash area for hands, rinsing produce or filling buckets, and in a shared bathroom it leaves space for two people at once. The long format also suits two faucets set side by side, one at each end of the trough. Its 2.5 inch height keeps the profile low, so the sink reads as a shallow stone tray on the counter rather than a tall bowl. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain connections. The beige tone works with warm wood, plaster, painted cabinetry and brass or black fittings, in modern, transitional and rustic rooms alike.

Installation

A long counter, cut to match

The sink is listed for above-counter or drop-in installation. Set on top, it needs a flat, level counter that runs the full 48 inches and is strong enough for a long piece of solid stone, which is heavy. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the sink is bedded in silicone. Dropped in, the counter is cut to the outline of the sink so the stone sits partly below the surface. Because the sink is only 2.5 inches high, a standard deck faucet set behind it can reach over the rim, and a wall-mounted spout is another option. Decide on the faucet, or the pair of faucets, before the counter is cut, and have an installer with stone experience handle the setting.

Why we chose it

  • Carved from one pieceThe basin and its walls are cut from a single block of fossil limestone, with no joints.
  • Fossil limestoneThe organic marks in the stone mean no two sinks look alike.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, with custom sizes and finishes on request.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 48 by 16 inch honed sink. If the counter calls for a different length, width or depth of basin, Every sink is carved individually by hand, so the honed finish and the fossil pattern come from the stone itself, not from a mould. It can also be made in a custom size, shape or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter and where the faucets will go.

Care

Limestone is a porous calcite stone, softer than marble, so acids such as vinegar or citrus can etch the honed surface and strong colours can stain it if left to sit. Sealing slows down how much moisture the stone takes in, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
