A double bowl travertine apron sink
This farmhouse kitchen sink is carved by hand from Troia Light travertine, a light beige stone quarried in Turkey. It measures 36 inches long, 18 inches wide and 7 inches high, with an apron front and two equal bowls side by side. Travertine has been used as a building stone for centuries, and here it brings warm, natural colour into the working heart of a kitchen. Each sink is crafted individually, so the colouring, veining and surface markings are unique to the piece that arrives. The walls are solid stone, 2 to 3 cm thick.
Design
Two equal bowls, honed and filled
The sink is divided 50/50 into two equal basins. One bowl can hold dishes and cleanup while the other stays free for rinsing produce, preparing vegetables or soaking something delicate, so two jobs can run at the same time during a busy meal. The 7 inch height gives deep basins for large pots, roasting pans and sheet pans. The surface is honed and filled: honing leaves the travertine smooth and matte, and filling closes the natural voids of the stone, which gives a smoother surface for cooking and cleaning than unfilled travertine. The apron front shows the face of the stone below the counter edge, the defining feature of a farmhouse sink. Moderate colour variation is normal, and the light beige carries soft natural veining that differs on every sink.

Built for a working kitchen
At 36 inches long and 18 inches wide, the sink gives a large workspace without being oversized for a typical farmhouse sink cabinet. The light, neutral tone with soft veining suits farmhouse, Mediterranean and contemporary kitchens, and it works beside minimalist stone counters as well as warm wood. The sink has 6.5 cm drain holes, which work with most standard kitchen drain fittings, so it can replace an existing sink or go into a new kitchen without special plumbing parts. It suits households that cook often and want a stone sink that handles daily use.

Installation
Size the cabinet to the sink
The sink is made for above-counter installation, with the apron front exposed. A stone sink of this size is heavy, so it needs a sink base cabinet sized to the 36 inch length and built strong enough to carry the stone and a full load of water, usually with added support under the sink. The countertop is then cut and fitted around the sink. Because each sink is handmade, it is best to have the sink on site before the cabinet and counter are finished, so they are fitted to the actual piece. Plan the faucet position and the drain fittings for the 6.5 cm openings at the same time. A professional installer is recommended.

Care
Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acidic foods and cleaners can etch the honed surface, and strong pigments can stain it if left. The filled surface reduces open voids, and sealing keeps moisture out; how often it is resealed depends on how much the kitchen is used.
